About translator apps

Travelers, students, people working across borders and anyone who reads or writes in more than one language use them for trips, correspondence, foreign documents and customer messages. Some lean on typing and pasting text, others on speaking into the microphone, pointing the camera at a sign or translating text inside another app. Accents, dialects, slang, handwriting and poor lighting are the hard cases, and each app copes with them differently. They also differ in which languages work offline and how natural the output sounds.

What to look for

  • Check which languages and input modes are supported, since a camera translator is useless if it cannot read the script you point it at.
  • Look at how the app handles offline use, because downloaded language packs are what keep it working without a data connection abroad.
  • Consider how conversations are handled, as a two-way mode with speaker detection is far more useful than passing a phone back and forth.
  • See how the app is paid for, since some rely on ads or paid tiers that limit voice minutes, camera scans or offline packs.
  • Check what happens to the text, voice and photos you submit, because translation requests often leave the device and privacy terms vary.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
