About PDF readers
Students reviewing lecture slides, office workers checking contracts on the go and anyone who receives PDFs by email can read files without converting them or moving to a computer. Lightweight viewers open files quickly. Others bundle editing, signing, merging and splitting, or cloud storage integration. A few prioritize highlighting, drawing and form filling, and others manage large libraries with folders and tags. Anyone who needs to mark up or organize documents, not just read them, will want more than a basic viewer.
What to look for
- Check how well the app renders complex PDFs with images, tables, and custom fonts, since poor rendering can make text unreadable or slow to scroll.
- Look at the annotation tools if you need to highlight, comment, or fill forms, because not every reader supports saving those edits back into the file.
- Consider the file management features, such as recent files, folders, and search, which matter when you deal with many documents on a phone.
- Find out whether the app shows ads or limits features behind a purchase, as free versions often restrict annotation or cloud syncing.
- Confirm that the app can open files stored on your device without an internet connection, which is important when traveling or in areas with poor signal.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
