About note-taking apps

Students, commuters, people in meetings and anyone who writes things down use them in place of scattered paper, half-finished documents and screenshots of things they meant to remember. Many also record audio, add tags and checklists, or take quick notes from the lock screen or share menu. Stylus-first apps treat the screen like a page of paper, which is ideal for diagrams but weak for long text; text-first apps are fast to type in but clumsy with ink. Some lean on cloud sync and collaboration, while others keep everything on the device.

What to look for

  • Check how handwriting is handled if you plan to use a stylus: whether ink stays as ink, converts to text, or both, since that decides whether your pages stay searchable.
  • Look at how sync works and whether it needs an account, because notes that live only on one phone are lost when that phone is.
  • See what export options exist, so you can move your notes out as plain text or standard files instead of being locked into one app.
  • Free versions often limit the number of notebooks, attachments or sync devices, so read what the paid tier adds before committing.
  • If you capture meetings, check how recordings and transcripts are stored and whether they are processed on the device or uploaded.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
