About interactive story games
A decision can close off a friendship, open a romance or send the plot down a darker road, and replaying to see another outcome is part of the appeal. They suit readers who want a story they can steer and players who prefer thinking to reflexes. Some branch widely, so two players can reach very different endings; others offer small variations on one authored path. Length ranges from a single sitting to a long serial released in chapters. Art, voice work and translation quality separate the polished from the rough.
What to look for
- Check how far your decisions reach: a game where choices only change dialogue feels very different from one where they alter the ending, so read the store description for hints about branching.
- Look at how progress is saved, because losing a long playthrough to a crash or a cleared cache is worse in a story game than in a quick arcade title.
- See how the story is paid for: some sell chapters or story passes, others charge for extra romantic routes or outfits, and a few show ads between scenes, which breaks the mood.
- Confirm the language and reading level, since a text-heavy game with a poor translation or small font is hard to enjoy on a phone screen.
- Check whether the game works offline, as many story apps need a connection to load each chapter even after you have installed them.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
