About open world games
Players who want a long-running game with something to do between story beats are the natural audience, provided they don't mind touch controls or a slightly slower pace on a phone. Some lean toward driving and street crime, others toward fantasy or post-apocalyptic role-playing, so combat, quests and tone differ a lot. Map size and density vary too: a huge map can feel empty, while a smaller one often packs in more to find, and the map itself is part of the appeal.
What to look for
- Check how the map is filled. A large area with little to do gets boring fast, while a smaller map with landmarks, side missions, and hidden items stays interesting.
- Look at the mission structure. A clear main storyline with optional side jobs gives direction, but a game that gates progress behind repetitive tasks can drag.
- See how the touch controls are laid out, since driving, aiming, and camera movement all compete for screen space, and a poor layout makes the whole game harder to play.
- Find out how the game makes money, because some charge once up front while others give the map away and sell items, vehicles, or progress inside it.
- Check whether the game can be played offline, as a free-roam world that needs a constant connection is limited on a commute or a trip.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
