They suit people who want a clear goal, a visible finish line and a reason to replay a stage until the jumps land cleanly. Styles range from pixel art throwbacks to modern side-scrollers. Some are gentle and forgiving, built for short sessions; others demand precise inputs and punish a missed jump. Movement feel matters more than looks, and a game that slows down or drops inputs is hard to enjoy however good the art is.

What to look for

  • Check how the touch controls are laid out, since a platformer lives or dies on whether jumping and running respond the moment you press.
  • Look at whether levels are hand-designed with a clear route and a finish, which is what separates a platformer from an endless runner.
  • See how the game makes money, because ads that interrupt mid-level or energy timers that stop you between attempts can break the flow of play.
  • Consider whether the game can be played offline, since a platformer is often something you pick up on a commute or in a waiting room.
