About puzzle adventure & escape games

They appeal to people who like a mystery with a mechanical challenge attached, whether the setting is a locked cell, a haunted house or a strange island. Point-and-click adventures lean on inventory logic and dialogue, escape rooms on spatial reasoning and codes, and prison-break stories on planning a route under pressure. Some are short and generous with clues, built for a single evening, while others are long and stingy, rewarding patience over speed. Getting stuck is the main frustration, and the better games offer graduated hints rather than dead ends.

What to look for

  • Check how hints work, because a hint system that reveals the full answer too early removes the satisfaction of solving, while one that offers nothing leaves you stuck with no way forward.
  • Look at whether puzzles follow their own internal logic or rely on arbitrary leaps, since a fair puzzle gives you enough information in the scene to reason it out.
  • Consider how the game saves progress, because losing a long chain of solved puzzles to a closed app is worse here than in almost any other genre.
  • See whether the game can be finished without paying, and how it asks for money, since some unlock chapters gradually while others interrupt a puzzle with an offer.
  • Check that it plays well offline and on a phone screen, because small hotspots and constant connection requirements get in the way of a game built around close observation.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
