About parental control apps

They suit parents of children with their own phone or tablet, and the fit changes with the child's age. Simple time limits and a bedtime lock suit a younger child, who will barely notice them. Detailed activity reports and keyword alerts suit a parent who wants more visibility into an older child's use. A few apps aim at both. Light control versus deep monitoring is the main divide across the category; either way, the aim is to manage a device without standing over a shoulder every evening.

What to look for

  • Check how the app filters content: whether it filters at the browser level, at the network level or across installed apps, since a filter that only covers one browser leaves obvious gaps.
  • Check what happens on the child's device when a limit is reached, because a lock that is easy to dismiss or that crashes the launcher is worse than no limit at all.
  • Check whether the child is told that monitoring is active, as hidden operation can damage trust and is restricted on Android.
  • Check how the service covers its costs, because a free tier may show ads to a child or cap the number of rules you can set, while a paid tier usually unlocks reports and longer history.
  • Check offline behavior and battery use, since a tool that stops working without a connection or drains the phone will be noticed and worked around.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
