About family locator & phone tracker apps

Households use them for a shared map instead of repeated where-are-you texts, parents to check that a child reached school, and others mainly to recover a misplaced handset. Some keep the group small and focus on accurate live positions; others add geofenced places that send a notice when someone arrives or leaves, in-app chat or driving reports. The main differences are how often locations refresh, how much detail each member can see and how much battery the background tracking uses.

What to look for

  • Check how often the app updates a position, because a locator that refreshes slowly can show a child blocks away from where they really are.
  • Look at whether every member can pause sharing or hide from the map, since a tracker that cannot be switched off tends to cause arguments at home.
  • See what happens on arrival and departure alerts, as geofenced places are only useful when the notice arrives quickly and names the right location.
  • Weigh the battery drain of constant background location against the accuracy you need, especially on phones that are already low on charge.
  • Find out how the app is paid for, whether through a subscription for extra members and history or through advertising inside the map view.
