About video players
They suit people with large local libraries, downloaded lectures or camera footage the stock player will not touch. Software decoding plays almost anything but drains the battery, while hardware decoding is lighter but limited to what the chip supports. Many add a floating window that keeps playback going over other apps, plus gestures for volume, brightness and seeking. Some focus on a clean, minimal interface, others on deep customization of subtitles and audio tracks, and a few on casting or network playback. Heavier feature sets can mean a steeper setup.
What to look for
- Check which containers and codecs the player decodes, since a file that opens elsewhere may fail here and force a switch to software decoding.
- Look at subtitle support, including external files, embedded tracks, and timing or styling adjustments, because syncing and formatting problems ruin otherwise fine playback.
- Consider how the player handles audio tracks and multi-channel sound, as downmixing or passthrough support decides whether dialogue and surround content come through correctly.
- See whether the interface stays out of the way during playback and whether gestures, playback speed, and a floating window are available.
- Note how the app is funded, whether through ads, a paid unlock, or donations, and what that means for what you see on screen and what data it asks for.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
