About live TV apps

Cord cutters, travelers and households that keep a TV package all use them to catch a specific channel at a specific time away from the living room. They differ mainly in how channels arrive. Some are full streaming packages that replace a cable subscription, some are free, ad-supported services with a fixed channel list, and some are players that accept a playlist or account from an outside provider. Channel selection, picture quality, recording limits and how many people can watch at once also vary.

What to look for

  • Check whether the app carries the specific channels you watch, since a large overall lineup is useless if your news or sports network is missing.
  • Confirm how many simultaneous streams and how much DVR storage the plan includes, because households with several viewers hit those limits quickly.
  • Look at whether the service requires a separate TV provider login, which decides whether the app works on its own or only as a companion.
  • Review the subscription price and cancellation terms, along with the ads on free tiers, so the ongoing cost is clear before signing up.
  • Check offline or mobile-data behavior, since live streams can consume a data allowance fast when Wi-Fi is not available.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
