About screen mirroring & casting apps

Typical uses are sharing media with a room, presenting from a phone and moving playback to a TV for better sound and a larger picture. Full mirroring copies the display in real time, so games, slideshows and presentations appear as they do on the phone, but it can lag and drain the battery. Casting a single file is smoother but limited to formats the receiver supports. Some apps cover many protocols and devices, others focus on one ecosystem. Setup effort, connection stability and reliance on ads or paid upgrades vary widely.

What to look for

  • Check which receiving devices and protocols the app supports, since a phone-to-TV app that only works with one brand or standard will be useless on hardware from another.
  • Look at how the app handles audio and latency during full screen mirroring, because a delay between picture and sound ruins video playback and games.
  • See whether casting works for local files, browser video and protected streaming content, as some apps cannot pass certain copy-protected material to a TV.
  • Consider what the app asks for before it can work, such as a companion receiver app, an account or extra permissions, because these affect setup time and privacy.
  • Note whether the free version limits session length, resolution or supported devices, and what a paid upgrade adds, so the app still fits how you plan to use it.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
