About live wallpaper apps
Some people want a subtle animated backdrop that stays out of the way; others want something playful that reacts every time they unlock the phone. The better ones loop smoothly, respond to swipes and taps and follow the phone's orientation without stuttering. They differ in how heavy the animation is, how much control you get over speed, colors and touch effects, and whether they offer a large library of ready-made scenes or a smaller set of adjustable ones. A rich scene can cost more battery and memory than a light one.
What to look for
- Check how the wallpaper behaves when the screen is off or another app is open, since a scene that keeps drawing in the background drains the battery faster.
- Look at whether touch and tilt effects respond on the home screen and the lock screen, because support varies and some scenes only animate in one place.
- See whether the app makes its money through ads on the picker screen, paid scene packs or a subscription, and whether ads appear over the wallpaper itself.
- Confirm the app works without a network connection if you want your background to keep animating on a plane or in a dead zone.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
