About wallpaper apps
They save hunting the web for images and resizing them by hand, and suit people who change backgrounds often, want matching home and lock screens, or would rather make something original than browse. Big galleries are built for quick browsing, while small editors build a single custom image from colors, patterns, text or your own photo. Live wallpaper apps sit in between with animated scenes that use more battery. Galleries fed by community uploads vary in quality, while curated ones stay consistent but offer fewer images.
What to look for
- Check the resolution and aspect ratio of the images, since a picture that looks sharp in a thumbnail can turn blurry or stretched once it fills a tall phone screen.
- For live wallpapers, look at how much battery and memory the animation uses, because a busy moving background can drain a phone faster than a static one.
- See how the app handles ads and paid content, as many wallpaper apps are free and supported by full-screen ads or a subscription that unlocks extra packs, which affects how pleasant browsing feels.
- Confirm whether images can be saved and set offline, so your background still works when you have no connection.
- Look at how easy it is to crop, preview and apply an image to the home screen, the lock screen or both, because a clumsy cropping tool can ruin an otherwise good picture.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
