About alarm clock apps

Many set puzzles or tasks that must be finished before the alarm stops, which helps heavy sleepers, while others aim for a gentler wake-up or flexible repeat rules for people on irregular shifts. They differ in how hard they are to silence, how much control you get over repeat days and sounds, and how far they go beyond waking you. A simple alarm stays out of the way, while a feature-heavy one adds sleep tracking, smart lights or a sunrise display, which can be useful or just clutter.

What to look for

  • Check how the app handles snooze and dismissal, since an alarm that is too easy to switch off in your sleep defeats the purpose, while one that demands a puzzle every morning can be frustrating.
  • Look at how alarms behave when the phone is silenced, in Do Not Disturb mode or low on battery, because an alarm that stays quiet or gets killed by battery saving is worse than no alarm at all.
  • Consider the sound options, including whether you can use your own music and how loud the alarm can get, as a tone you sleep through is no help.
  • Review what the app asks for in permissions and what it collects, since an alarm needs to run at set times and may request access to your contacts or location that it does not need.
  • Decide whether you want a free app supported by ads or a paid version that removes them, and weigh that against the extra features each tier includes.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
