PhotoDirector: AI Photo Editor screenshots
If you take a lot of photos on your phone and want more than a basic crop-and-filter app, PhotoDirector is worth a look. Cyberlink has built it around AI-assisted editing: retouching faces and bodies, removing unwanted objects, swapping backgrounds, generating art styles and even turning stills into short videos. It is free to install and carries ads, with in-app purchases available, so the barrier to trying it is low.
The app has been on Google Play since March 2014 and has passed 50 million installs, with a 4.2 average across more than 943,000 ratings. The developer describes it as an intuitive editor with hundreds of styles, effects and templates, and pitches it as having over 120 million downloads. Those numbers suggest a mature product rather than a novelty, which matters if you want something that will keep working as your editing habits grow.
Turning stills into motion
The feature the developer leads with is Image to Video, which animates a photo with motion. Kling, Google Veo and PixVerse are named as the engines behind it, and a separate AI Anime Video tool turns a single photo into an animated anime clip. A Cinematic Reel Creator, added in a recent update, does something similar for a set of photos, assembling them into a short cinematic video.
Character and Pet Motion Swap takes this further. The developer says it drops subjects into trending dances and memes, and credits Wan 2.2 and Kling Motion Control for the effect. AI Video Try-On shows outfits on moving clips rather than stills, while AI Group Shot, also new, generates group photos and videos.
What appeals to me here is the range of ways to get motion out of material you already have. If you shoot a lot of portraits, pets or family moments and want something short and shareable without learning a video editor, these tools are the obvious draw. The caveat is that generative video is the part of this app most likely to vary with the source photo.
Portraits, products and quick fixes
Underneath the generative tools sits a conventional editing layer. AI Removal erases unwanted items or wires with automatic detection, AI Replace adds or swaps elements, and AI Expand turns a close-up into a wider shot or changes the aspect ratio. AI Background uses a cutout tool to replace plain backgrounds behind products or portraits, and AI Relight adds a virtual light source.
Retouching is well covered. Face Reshape smooths skin, removes blemishes and wrinkles and refines the jawline and nose, while Body Reshape, Makeup and camera AR effects cover selfies. AI Glow Up brightens faces with adjustable lighting modes, and AI Hairstyle and AI Try-On let you preview styles and outfits. AI Headshot produces profile photos, and AI Art converts an image into characters, Japanese animation, sketch or cartoon looks.
For routine work there is Quick Action, which detects and enhances an image in one tap, plus AI Enhance for low-resolution or blurry pictures and automatic color correction with manual controls when you want them. Collage handles holiday content and social posts, and the app includes stickers, text styles, frames and effects. AI Edit Agent is the most interesting of these: you type what you want and the edit is applied, which suits anyone who would rather describe a change than hunt through menus.
What it asks of you
PhotoDirector is free to download and supported by ads, and it offers in-app purchases. A Premium tier opens up more stickers, filters, backgrounds and effects, lets you save images at Ultra HD 4K camera resolution, and removes distractions.
The practical requirement is a willingness to accept ads if you stay on the free tier. The app is rated for Everyone and the developer maintains a support channel and an Instagram account for inspiration, which is useful if you like seeing examples before committing.
I would treat Premium as something to decide on after using the free version for a while. The listed benefits are specific enough to judge: more content packs, 4K saving and fewer interruptions.
How I would use it
The sensible approach is to start with Quick Action and AI Enhance on a photo you already like, then move to the targeted tools. If a background is cluttered, AI Removal or AI Background will do more than a filter. If a portrait needs work, Face Reshape and AI Glow Up are the ones to reach for before you try anything generative.
Save the video features for material that suits them. A single strong portrait works for Image to Video or AI Anime Video; a set of related shots suits the Cinematic Reel Creator. Motion Swap and Try-On are best on clear, well-lit subjects.
For social output, Collage and the Creative Studio templates handle the layout work, and the sticker, text and frame options let you finish a post without leaving the app. If you shoot products, the cutout and background tools plus AI Expand cover the common needs of a listing photo. The AI Edit Agent is the shortcut worth learning early, because describing an edit is faster than remembering where a control lives.
Where the trade-offs sit
The main trade-off is that this is a broad app rather than a specialist one. Generative video, retouching, collages, templates and manual color work all live in the same place, which is convenient. If you only ever retouch portraits, or only ever make short videos, a narrower tool may fit better.
The second is the free-tier arrangement. Ads and in-app purchases are part of the package, and the developer ties 4K saving and the fuller content library to Premium. That is a normal model for a photo editor.
None of this undermines the core offer. For someone who wants one app that can clean up a photo, restyle it and turn it into a short clip, the breadth is the point. The 4.2 average from a very large number of ratings suggests the approach has worked for a lot of people over the years.
A capable all-rounder for casual creators
PhotoDirector suits people who want quick, good-looking results without learning a desktop editor. The AI tools cover the tasks most phone photographers actually run into: removing clutter, fixing lighting, reshaping a portrait, replacing a background and producing something worth posting. The generative video side gives it an edge over editors that stop at stills.
It is less suited to anyone who wants a single, deep specialist tool, or who objects to ads and purchases in a free app. If you are happy with that model and want one place to handle photos and short videos, this is a reasonable install. Try the free version first, and let the Premium extras decide themselves.
The short verdict
A broad, AI-driven photo and video editor that suits casual creators happy to accept ads and optional Premium purchases.

PhotoDirector: AI Photo Editor: frequently asked questions
What can PhotoDirector actually do with my photos?
It covers both conventional editing and AI-assisted work. You can remove unwanted objects, replace or expand parts of an image, swap backgrounds, relight a scene, enhance low-resolution pictures and correct color automatically or by hand. Retouching tools handle skin, blemishes, jawline, nose, body shape and makeup, and there are collages, stickers, text styles and frames for social posts.
Can it turn a photo into a video?
Yes. Image to Video animates a still with motion, using Kling, Google Veo and PixVerse as the engines behind it. There is also an AI Anime Video tool that turns one photo into an animated anime clip, and a Cinematic Reel Creator that builds a short cinematic video from a set of photos.
Is PhotoDirector free, and what does Premium add?
PhotoDirector is free to download and shows ads, with in-app purchases available. Premium opens up more stickers, filters, backgrounds and effects, saves images at Ultra HD 4K camera resolution, and removes distractions.
How does the AI Edit Agent work?
You type what you want changed and the app applies the edit, rather than you working through menus and sliders. It is one of several AI features in the app, alongside removal, replacement, expansion, background changes, relighting and enhancement. It is best treated as a shortcut for straightforward adjustments.
What is new in the latest update?
The recent update adds two tools. Cinematic Reel Creator turns your photos into short cinematic videos using AI, and AI Group Shot creates natural-looking group photos and videos. There are also behind-the-scenes improvements aimed at smoother editing.
