About GPS speedometer & speed camera apps

Drivers turn to them when the car's own speedometer is hard to read, when it reads wrong after a tire change, or for an extra reminder about enforcement points on a familiar route. They suit commuters, delivery and rideshare drivers, motorcyclists and anyone renting a car with an unfamiliar dash. Some focus on a clean, bright speed readout and little else, which keeps them light and easy to glance at. Others concentrate on camera databases and spoken alerts, which need regular updates and a data connection. A few combine both, at the cost of a busier screen and more battery use.

What to look for

  • Check how the app gets its speed reading and whether it keeps working when the GPS signal drops in tunnels or between tall buildings, since a frozen number is worse than no number.
  • Look at how camera warnings are delivered, whether by voice, a chime or a visual cue, and whether the alert arrives early enough to matter at highway speed.
  • Find out where the camera locations come from and how often they are refreshed, because an out-of-date database produces false alarms and missed warnings.
  • Consider what the app does with location history and whether it stores trips on the phone or sends them off the device, as this kind of app knows where you drive every day.
  • Weigh the screen-on time and background behavior, since a display that stays lit and a constant GPS lock will drain the battery on longer drives.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
