About tide & wind forecast apps

Sailors, surfers, kitesurfers and anglers all use them, but they watch different things. A surfer cares about swell period and direction, a kitesurfer about gusts and lulls, an angler about tide movement and current timing. Some apps lean on a single forecast model and stay light; others blend several models, add station-by-station tide predictions and sometimes show currents. Data comes as a table or a chart, and coverage, offline access and the amount of detail on screen separate one app from the next.

What to look for

  • Check which tide stations and forecast models the app covers for your area, since a spot that is missing from the station list leaves you reading a prediction from far away.
  • See whether wind and wave data can be read offline or cached, because coastal signal is often weak and a forecast you cannot open is no forecast at all.
  • Look at how gusts, lulls and wave period are displayed, as average wind alone hides the squalls that decide whether a session is safe.
  • Find out how the app is paid for, whether that means free with banner ads, a subscription that unlocks extra models, or a single upfront charge.
  • Read the privacy policy and permission list, since a location-based marine app can collect precise position data every time it is opened.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
