About flight tracker apps
They help when you are meeting someone at the gate, when a connection is tight or when you want to know why a plane is circling. Frequent flyers, people picking up passengers and anyone curious about the traffic above them all use them. Some center on detailed status for a single flight, with gate changes, delays and baggage claim. Others are built around the radar view, showing many aircraft at once with filters by altitude, airline or route. Coverage varies by region, and free versions often limit how far back you can look or how many alerts you can set.
What to look for
- Check how the app gets its flight data and how often it refreshes, because a stale position or an old status is worse than no answer at all.
- Look at the map tools: filters, playback of a past flight, and the ability to tap an aircraft for its route and altitude decide how useful the radar view is.
- See what alerts you can set, such as departure, arrival, delay or gate change, and whether they arrive as notifications without opening the app.
- Consider how the app pays for itself, since many limit alerts, history or map layers unless you pay, and some show ads between screens.
- Check offline behavior if you travel without a reliable connection, as a map that needs constant data will not help in the air.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
