About fishing apps
Some also sell or display a fishing license, so a valid permit is on the phone at the water. They suit casual anglers on a local lake as well as people who travel to new water and need local knowledge fast. Map-led apps carry the most spot detail but rely on other users to keep it current. Forecast-led apps are stronger on conditions but lighter on places to stand. Logbook-led apps are private and tidy for record keeping, yet offer little help before the trip. License tools are narrow but official.
What to look for
- Check where the spot and forecast data comes from, because a map built by other anglers can be thin or stale in your area while an official source is narrower but more reliable.
- Look at whether forecasts are given for a specific water or a nearby town, since wind and pressure can shift over a short distance and a town reading may not match the bank.
- See how the app handles licences and local rules, as some cover only certain regions and a permit bought in the wrong place is no use.
- Consider the price and ads, since some apps charge a subscription for saved spots or offline maps while others are free and supported by advertising.
- Check offline behaviour before you rely on it, because signal is often poor at the water and cached maps, forecasts and log entries need to work without a connection.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
