About eBook apps

They split by where books come from. Store apps tie you to one seller's catalog but keep purchases and sync simple. Reader apps open files you already own, so you supply the books. Library lending apps connect to public collections and manage due dates and returns. Some also read aloud in a synthesized voice, which helps on a commute or when your eyes tire of the screen. Whether you buy, borrow or bring your own files matters most, followed by narration and offline reading.

What to look for

  • Check which stores or public library systems the app can reach, since a reader with no catalog is only useful for files you already own.
  • Look at how the app handles borrowed titles, including due dates, automatic returns, and whether a returned book stays readable offline.
  • Judge the read-aloud voice quality and speed controls if you plan to listen, because a flat or rushed voice makes long books hard to follow.
  • Consider how books are stored on the device and whether downloads can be moved to a memory card, which matters on phones with little free space.
  • See what the app charges for and what appears as advertising or paid extras, so you know the cost before building a library inside it.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
