About crypto apps
Beyond buying and selling, they quote prices, move coins between addresses and keep a record of what you own. They suit everyone from first-time buyers to regular traders, and the biggest difference is who controls the funds. Exchange apps are easier to start with because the operator holds the balance and can reset a password, but that means trusting a third party with your assets. Self-custody wallets put the keys in your hands and usually charge network fees only, yet support cannot restore a lost recovery phrase. Trading tools sit between the two, offering charts and order types at the cost of a busier interface.
What to look for
- Check who holds the private keys, because an app that keeps them for you can freeze or lose access to your balance, while one that hands them over makes you responsible for a backup.
- Look at how trades are priced and what commission is added on top, since a wide spread between buy and sell quotes can cost more than a stated fee.
- Confirm that the recovery phrase is generated on the device and never sent anywhere, as a phrase that leaves your phone can be copied by whoever receives it.
- See which coins and networks are supported before installing, because an app tied to a single chain will not hold assets issued elsewhere.
- Consider whether you need offline signing or a PIN and biometric lock, since a phone that is lost or unlocked by someone else puts the whole balance at risk.
How we rank
Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
