About background remover apps

Sellers preparing product shots, people making profile pictures and hobbyists building stickers, collages or composites can get clean cutouts without learning a full editor. Tools that rely on automatic detection finish in a tap but leave little room to fix a stray edge. Those that let you brush the mask back and forth by hand take longer but handle tricky outlines. A few add replacement backgrounds or effects, and file export options vary from app to app.

What to look for

  • Check how the app handles edges and fine detail such as hair, fur or thin straps, because a cutout that looks clean at a glance can show a hard, jagged outline once it is placed on a new background.
  • Look at whether you can correct the automatic result with a brush or eraser, since detection gets confused by busy backgrounds and low-contrast subjects and you will want a way to repair those areas.
  • See what happens to the cutout after processing, including whether you get a transparent file and at what resolution, as a low-resolution or flattened export limits what you can do with it later.
  • Find out how the app is paid for, such as a subscription for unlimited cutouts or a charge for individual exports, so you know what you get before and after paying.
  • Consider how photos are handled, including whether processing happens on the device and what the app stores or sends out, which matters for images of people or private documents.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
