McAfee: Stay Secure & Private screenshots
Most security apps on Android do one job. McAfee's pitch is that it does several, and does them from one screen: threat scanning, a VPN, identity monitoring and scam detection are presented as parts of a single service rather than separate downloads. That bundling is the most distinctive thing about it, and it is why the app has been around long enough to gather more than 50 million installs and a 4.7 average from over 905,000 ratings.
I'd expect it to appeal most to people who would rather not assemble their own set of tools. If you want one app that watches your messages, your connection and your personal details, and tells you in plain language when something needs attention, this is built for that. If you prefer to pick a specialist for each job, the overlap will feel like more than you asked for.
The app is free to download and has been published by McAfee LLC since May 2011, with the most recent update in September 2026. Purchases are part of the picture, and I'll come to what the paid tiers add.
Scam detection, the part the developer leads with
Scam Detector covers three channels: texts, emails and videos. It flags risky messages, identifies suspicious emails before you open them, and blocks harmful sites even if you tap through by accident. The developer's emphasis is on explanation as much as blocking, with alerts written in simple language that tell you what the danger is and what to watch for next time.
That teaching element is the part I find most interesting. A block on its own tells you nothing; a short note explaining why a message was risky is the sort of thing that changes how you read the next one. It is also the sort of feature that only earns its keep if the alerts are accurate, since a detector that cries wolf gets ignored.
It arrives with a paid tier, and it is also listed for McAfee LiveSafe and McAfee Total Protection. If scam texts are your main concern, that placement matters more than anything else in the app.
Antivirus, VPN and the rest of the toolkit
Underneath the headline feature sits a more conventional set of tools. Antivirus scans files, apps and downloads automatically and works in real time, and a Wi-Fi scan checks the network you are on for security risks. Safe browsing blocks malicious sites on its own, so you are not relying on spotting a bad link yourself.
The Secure VPN is described as using bank-grade encryption to keep your data and location private, and it is positioned around public Wi-Fi hotspots in particular. It also lets you connect through other countries and change your apparent location and IP address. Not every feature is available on every device, in every location or on every subscription.
The identity side is broader than I expected from a phone app. Monitoring watches up to ten email addresses along with ID numbers, passport numbers and similar details, and alerts you if any of it turns up in a breach or on the dark web. Transaction and credit monitoring keep an eye on bank and card activity and track changes to your credit score. Personal Data Cleanup finds your information on sites that sell it and can remove it for you, and Online Account Cleanup finds old accounts you have forgotten about and can delete them. Social Privacy Manager adjusts more than a hundred privacy settings across your social accounts in a few taps.
What each tier asks of you
The free version is genuinely limited: one device, an antivirus scan, a Wi-Fi scan and an identity scan. Basic Protection keeps you on a single device but adds the VPN, basic identity monitoring and safe browsing. McAfee+ Advanced is where the app opens up, with unlimited devices and the full set of cleanup, monitoring and coverage tools.
Advanced also adds coverage and restoration if your identity is stolen, tools to freeze your credit and lock it, and round-the-clock access to online security experts. The tiers differ in more than price, so the full breakdown of plans is worth reading before you commit.
One requirement is easy to miss. The antivirus and virus cleaner are only available on PCs and Android devices, so protection across all your devices does not extend the antivirus component to every platform you might own.
The app also uses the Accessibility Service API to see information about the websites you visit, which is how it blocks harmful sites as you browse. That is a broad permission, and it is worth understanding that it exists to power real-time site protection rather than anything else.
Getting the most from it
The sensible approach is to start with the free tier and treat it as a trial of the interface rather than a security setup. Run the antivirus and Wi-Fi scans, take the identity scan, and see whether the alerts are written in a way you find useful. If the app's tone suits you, the paid tiers are an easier decision.
When you do move up, I'd suggest setting up the identity monitoring first, since it is the piece that runs in the background and only proves its value when something turns up. Adding your email addresses and the ID and passport details you want watched is a one-time job, and the alerts that follow are the payoff.
The cleanup tools reward a slower pass. Personal Data Cleanup and Online Account Cleanup both surface things you have probably forgotten, and working through the list rather than accepting everything at once keeps you aware of what is being removed on your behalf. Social Privacy Manager is the same idea in miniature: a hundred-odd settings changed in a few taps is convenient, so it is worth seeing what changed.
If scam messages are what worry you most, check the tier you are on before relying on that feature.
A broad package for people who want one app
McAfee's strength is coverage. Antivirus, a VPN, scam detection, identity monitoring and data cleanup in a single app is a lot of ground, and the plain-language alerts make the whole thing feel less like a control panel and more like something that talks to you. The 4.7 average across a very large number of ratings suggests that approach lands with a lot of people.
The trade-offs are the tier structure and the reach of the antivirus component. The features most likely to draw you in, scam detection and the cleanup tools, sit above the free level, and the antivirus side stops at PCs and Android. Anyone expecting one subscription to cover every kind of device should read the plan details carefully.
I'd point this at households and individuals who want their security handled in one place and are willing to pay for the higher tier to get the identity and scam tools. If you only want a virus scanner on a single phone, the free version covers that ground and nothing more.
The short verdict
A well-rounded security app whose best features sit in the paid tiers, best for people who want one service covering devices, messages and identity.

McAfee: Stay Secure & Private: frequently asked questions
What do you get with the free version of McAfee?
The free tier covers a single device and includes an antivirus scan, a Wi-Fi scan and an identity scan. The VPN and identity monitoring are not part of it. It is enough to see how the app works, but the features the developer highlights sit above this level.
How does the Scam Detector work?
It flags risky texts, emails and videos, identifies suspicious emails before you open them, and blocks harmful sites even if you tap through by accident. The alerts are written in plain language and explain what the danger was, so you know what to look for next time. It comes with a paid tier, and the recent update also lists it for McAfee LiveSafe and McAfee Total Protection.
What does the Secure VPN do?
It encrypts your connection to keep your data and location private, with the developer describing the encryption as bank-grade. It is pitched at unsecured public Wi-Fi hotspots in particular. It can also connect through different countries and change your location and IP address, though availability varies by device, location and subscription.
Does McAfee monitor my identity and credit?
Yes. Identity monitoring watches up to ten email addresses along with ID numbers, passport numbers and similar details, and alerts you if they turn up in a leak or on the dark web. Transaction and credit monitoring watch bank and card activity and track changes to your credit score.
Can McAfee remove my personal data from the web?
Yes. Personal Data Cleanup tells you when your information appears on sites that sell it, guides you through what to do, and can step in to remove it. Online Account Cleanup finds old or unused accounts and can delete them for you as well.
