Managing turf well is mostly a matter of timing. Water too late or too little, miss the window when disease pressure climbs, and the damage shows up weeks later in the sward. Weather apps give you a forecast, but they rarely connect that forecast to what is happening in the soil under a specific green, fairway or sports field.
GreenCast Connect by Syngenta is built for that gap. It is a free app from developer Spiio that pulls weather data, pest and disease risk modeling, soil sensing and turf-specific guidance into a single dashboard, with the Syngenta name attached to the agronomic side. The pitch is straightforward: one place for the numbers you check before deciding whether to spray, irrigate or hold off.
Forecasting that ties into pest and disease risk
The feature the developer leads with is prediction. The app provides weather forecasting, but the more interesting part is the pest and disease risk modeling layered on top. Instead of showing you a temperature curve and leaving you to interpret it, the app models the conditions that favor problems and presents that as risk you can act on.
Customizable alerts sit alongside the forecasting. You decide which alerts matter to your site, and the September 2026 update rebuilt this side of the app. Notifications can now follow a delivery schedule you set per notification type, and weather and pest alerts arrive as a daily or weekly summary rather than one message at a time. The developer says this fixes earlier mistimed and duplicate alerts, which is the kind of housekeeping that matters more than it sounds when you are the person fielding the notifications.
A first-launch carousel walks through what changed, so anyone updating from an earlier version gets a short orientation rather than discovering the new notification behavior by accident.
Sensors, scouting and the monitoring layer
Monitoring is where the app leans on hardware. GreenCast Connect integrates with Spiio sensors, and soil sensing data feeds into the dashboard alongside everything else. On-site scouting tools let you record what you see while walking the course or grounds, and real-time condition tracking keeps the current state of your areas visible.
The sensor side gained a scheduling feature in the latest update. Sensor Schedule also covers ambient sensors, with readings taken every 15, 30 or 60 minutes and as many as 24 send times per day. That gives you control over how much data flows in and when it lands, which is useful when you want a tighter picture during a stress period and a lighter feed the rest of the season.
Setting up an area has also been reworked. When you add or change an area, the app asks for its type, soil and turf species, so your site's terms are recorded as you go. That structure is what makes the tailored insights and performance analysis meaningful later, because the recommendations have something specific to attach to.
What the app asks of you
GreenCast Connect is free, so there is no paywall between you and the features described. That is unusual for a tool with this much behind it, and it makes trying it a low-risk decision.
The practical requirement is sensors. The monitoring and soil-sensing side depends on integration with Spiio sensors, so the app is most useful to someone who already has that hardware on site or is planning to add it. Without sensors you still get forecasting, risk modeling, alerts and the management guidance, but the live soil picture is the part that needs the equipment.
The other requirement is your own input. Area setup, scouting notes and the choices you make about alert types and schedules all shape what the app gives back. It is a tool that rewards a bit of configuration rather than one that works out of the box on defaults alone.
Getting useful results from it
If I were setting this up, I would start with areas rather than alerts.
From there, the notification schedule is worth thinking through deliberately. A daily summary of weather and pest alerts suits routine monitoring, while a weekly digest may be enough in quieter periods. Because delivery is now configurable per notification type, you can keep the urgent categories frequent and let the rest arrive in batches.
Sensor sampling is the third dial to set. Fifteen-minute sampling with frequent deliveries gives a detailed record during heat stress, disease pressure or a renovation; a 60-minute interval with a handful of daily deliveries is lighter and still tracks the trend. Matching the schedule to the season keeps the data manageable.
Finally, the scouting tools are only as good as the notes you put in them. Recording what you observe while you are already out on the turf takes a minute and gives the performance analysis something real to work with over time.
A turf tool for sensor-equipped crews
GreenCast Connect is not a general-purpose weather app, and it does not try to be. It is a digital agronomy tool for turf and landscape management, and everything in it points at that job: risk models for pests and disease, soil sensing, scouting, area vocabulary and Syngenta-backed recommendations.
The install base is modest, with more than 10,000 installs and a 4.0 average from 37 ratings, so it is still finding its audience rather than dominating the category. The release date of January 15, 2025 places it among newer entrants, and the September 2026 update shows active development on the notification and sensor scheduling sides.
It suits greenkeepers, grounds crews, sports turf managers and landscape professionals who want forecasting and agronomic guidance in one place, and it makes the most sense for those working with Spiio sensors. If you manage turf and already track soil conditions, this is a free way to bring the weather, the risk models and the sensor data onto one screen.
The short verdict
A free, focused turf management app that is at its best for crews already using Spiio sensors.
What's new in version 1.4.3
What's new? Notifications rebuilt. Set a delivery schedule per notification type in Settings. Weather and pest alerts now arrive as a daily or weekly summary instead of one by one, fixing earlier mistimed and duplicate alerts. A first-launch carousel shows what changed. New area vocabulary. Creating or editing an area steps through area types, soil types and turf species. Aero sensor schedule. Ambient sensors join Sensor Schedule: 15, 30 or 60 min sampling, up to 24 daily delivery times.

GreenCast Connect by Syngenta: frequently asked questions
What does GreenCast Connect actually do?
It brings weather forecasting, pest and disease risk modeling, soil sensing, scouting tools and turf management guidance into one dashboard. The developer, Syngenta, positions it as a digital agronomy tool for turf and landscape professionals. It is aimed at people making decisions about irrigation, treatment and day-to-day turf care rather than general weather watching.
Do I need Spiio sensors to use it?
The app integrates with Spiio sensors, and that is how the soil sensing and real-time condition tracking side works. Forecasting, pest and disease risk modeling, alerts and the management guidance stand on their own. The live soil data is the part that depends on having the hardware in place.
How do the notifications work now?
Alerts were reworked, and Settings lets you choose how often each kind is sent. Rather than one message at a time, weather and pest warnings can come as a daily or weekly digest, which the developer says fixes the timing and duplication problems of the old alerts. A carousel on first launch explains what changed.
Can I control how often sensors sample?
Yes. Ambient sensors are part of Sensor Schedule, where you can choose sampling intervals of 15, 30 or 60 minutes. You can also set up to 24 delivery times a day. That lets you run a tighter sampling window during stress periods and a lighter one the rest of the time.
Does it cost anything?
No. GreenCast Connect is free to download, carries no ads and has no in-app purchases.
