Brawl Stars is a free mobile game from Supercell that mixes team-based MOBA combat with battle royale survival, and it has been one of the most installed action games on Android for years. The pitch is speed: matches run under three minutes, they are played against other people online, and you can drop in solo or with friends. What appeals to me most is that structure. It takes the character progression and team tactics of a full-scale MOBA and compresses them into rounds short enough to fit almost anywhere.

The numbers behind it are hard to ignore. More than 500 million installs and a 4.2 average across roughly 26 million ratings put it in rare company. It arrived in December 2018 and is still being updated, with the most recent patch landing in October 2026. That track record matters if you are deciding whether a free-to-play game is worth your time.

It is also worth saying up front that this is a competitive game with in-app purchases. The download costs nothing and there are no ads, but some items can be bought with real money, including random items, so it sits firmly in the free-to-play model rather than pretending otherwise. Whether that is a problem depends on how you feel about that model in general.

A MOBA and battle royale in one arena

The game is set in what the developer calls the Brawliverse, a collection of arena locations that host different modes. You control a Brawler, each with a signature attack and a super ability, and some with star powers and gadgets that change how they play. The roster runs into the dozens, and collecting and leveling them is a large part of the appeal.

That roster is the real content here. A new Brawler changes how a match feels more than a new map does, because each one comes with its own attack pattern and super. The October 2026 update added two: Cosmo, a magnetic robot scientist who bends gravity to his advantage, and Vince, a barista obsessed with bugs who attacks with caterpillars and coffee. Whatever else you say about the game, it is not short of characters to try.

Cosmetics sit alongside the roster. Brawlers can be customized with unlockable skins, and the developer frames skins as a way to stand out and show off. I read them as self-expression rather than advantage, which is the healthier way for a competitive game to handle cosmetic items.

How a match actually plays out

The mode list is broad, and each one changes the goal rather than just the scenery. Gem Grab is the closest thing to a classic MOBA objective: two teams of three or five fight over gems, and you win by collecting and holding ten of them. The twist is that getting eliminated costs you your gems, so a lead can evaporate in seconds and the last stretch of a match is genuinely tense.

Showdown takes the battle royale route. You play solo or as a duo, collect power-ups for your Brawler, and the last one standing takes everything. It is a different rhythm from the team modes, more cautious and more about positioning than about coordinated pushes, and it is the mode I would point a solo player toward first.

The remaining modes each have a single clear objective. Brawl Ball is soccer with Brawlers, where the first team to two goals wins. Bounty is a race for stars, earned by taking out opponents while protecting your own lead. Heist asks you to defend your team's safe while trying to crack the other team's, which rewards sneaking and burst damage as much as straight fighting. On top of those, the developer runs limited-time PvE and PvP events, and says new events and modes appear daily.

What keeps a long-term player busy

Progression is built around the Brawl Pass, a seasonal track where you complete quests, open Brawl Boxes and earn gems, pins and an exclusive skin. The developer promises fresh content with each season, and season 54, Royal Academy, arrived with the October 2026 update. A seasonal structure gives returning players a reason to come back without requiring them to commit to long sessions.

Competition is layered on top of that. You can climb local and regional leaderboards, and there are global rankings as well, so there is always a number to push. The Championship Challenge connects the game to its esports scene through in-game qualifiers, which gives the most dedicated players a route beyond ordinary matchmaking.

Clubs round out the social side. Clubs let you team up, swap advice and fight alongside others, or you can create one of your own. Players can also design their own maps. Between seasons, events, clubs and rankings, there is clearly more here than a single mode played on repeat.

Cost, ads and what the game asks of you

Brawl Stars is free to download and play. If you would rather not spend, you can turn off in-app purchases in your device settings, which is a blunt but effective approach.

The game may also ask for optional permissions through in-game pop-ups. Camera access is for scanning QR codes, and notification permission is for game-related messages. Consent is optional, you can decline inside the game, and refusing may stop certain features from working properly. That is a reasonable amount of transparency for a mobile game of this scale.

The content rating is Everyone 10+, while an IGRS rating of 15+ is also listed, so parents should look at both before deciding. The developer maintains a parent's guide alongside its privacy policy and terms, which is the first place I would check if you are setting this up for a younger player.

Where the design pushes back

The main thing to weigh is that this is a live competitive game with a spending system attached. Random items are explicitly part of what can be purchased, and the seasonal Brawl Pass structure is designed to keep you engaged over time. None of that is unusual for the genre, but it is the part of the package that asks the most from you, in attention if not in money.

Team modes reward coordination, and a squad that communicates will generally do better than a group of strangers. The developer leans into this by promoting clubs and teaming up with friends, which tells you where the game expects its most satisfying play to happen.

Finally, the game is broad rather than deep in any single direction. There are many modes, many Brawlers and frequent events, and keeping up with all of it takes ongoing time. If you want a competitive game you can dip into for a few matches and then set down for a month, the seasonal content will keep moving without you.

A quick word on the latest update

Update 69, covering September and October 2026, is a good snapshot of how the game evolves. It added the two new Brawlers, Cosmo and Vince, along with a 20-player mode called Mega Boss Duo that is meant to teach the art of Brawling. A mode built for twenty players is a notable departure from the three-on-three and five-on-five format that defines the rest of the game.

The same update brought a back-to-school theme with a Duolingo collaboration, a Brawl-O-Ween mystery involving a companion tied to Gus' balloon, and the Royal Academy Brawl Pass season. That mix of characters, events, crossovers and seasonal rewards is the pattern the game has settled into, and it is the clearest sign of what a long-term player can expect going forward.

A strong pick for short competitive sessions

Brawl Stars earns its install count by doing something specific well: it delivers team-based competitive action in rounds short enough to fit into a break, backed by a roster large enough to keep the experience from going stale. The mode variety is real rather than cosmetic.

It suits players who enjoy competitive multiplayer and are comfortable with a free-to-play game that sells items, including random ones. It also suits anyone who wants the tactics of a MOBA without the time commitment of a full match on PC. If you prefer games you own outright and play at your own pace, the seasonal model here will feel like more of an obligation than a hobby.

For everyone else, this is one of the more polished options in its category, and the price of entry is nothing. I would try it for a week of short sessions before deciding whether the Brawl Pass and the grind are worth your time.

The short verdict

A polished, fast-paced competitive game that suits players happy with a free-to-play model and short online matches.

Brawl Stars: frequently asked questions

Is Brawl Stars free to play?

Yes, the game is free to download and play, and there are no ads. Real-money purchases exist for some items, and some of those are random. If you would rather avoid spending, the developer suggests turning off in-app purchases in your device settings.

What game modes does Brawl Stars include?

The core modes are Gem Grab, Showdown, Brawl Ball, Bounty and Heist, played as three-on-three or five-on-five teams, with Showdown also available solo or as a duo. Gem Grab is won by holding ten gems, Brawl Ball by scoring two goals, Bounty by collecting the most stars and Heist by cracking the enemy safe. The developer also runs limited-time PvE and PvP events and says new modes and events appear daily.

How long does a match take?

Matches run in under three minutes, which is the core of the game's appeal. That length is what makes the game easy to fit into a short break. Longer formats exist through special events, such as the 20-player Mega Boss Duo mode added in the October 2026 update.

What is the Brawl Pass?

The Brawl Pass is a seasonal track: finish quests, open Brawl Boxes and collect gems, pins and an exclusive skin. Each season brings fresh content, and season 54, Royal Academy, arrived alongside the October 2026 update. It gives returning players a recurring set of goals rather than a one-off campaign.

Can I play with friends or join a club?
