Among Us is best suited to people who already have a group to play with, or who are happy to join strangers online. It is a social deduction game for 4 to 15 players, and the fun depends on other people: the talking, the accusations, the excuses. If you like the idea of a round where nobody is quite sure who to trust, this is built around exactly that tension.

The premise is simple. Everyone is a crewmate trying to get a spaceship ready to leave, except for one player who is an impostor and is quietly working against the rest. Either the crew finishes its tasks, or it votes out the impostor. The impostor wins by staying hidden long enough to pick the crew off.

It is free to download, with ads and in-app purchases present, and it carries an Everyone 10+ rating. The install numbers are enormous, over 500 million, and the average rating sits at 3.9 from more than 13 million ratings. It first arrived in June 2018, so it has had years to accumulate that audience.

Why the deception hook works

What appeals to me is that the game rewards reading people more than reflexes. One odd movement or a story that does not add up can decide a round, and sabotage gives the impostor cover.

That structure means the same match can play out very differently depending on who is in it. Some groups will be methodical, pooling what everyone saw and working through it. Others will be loud and chaotic, voting on instinct. The players set the tone.

The experience also depends on the group. Talkative players make the deduction interesting, while silence or random votes drain the point out of it. That is the nature of a bluffing game.

Tasks, sabotage and the vote

Crewmates can win two ways: finish every task, or find the impostor and vote them off. These goals conflict, since working alone makes you a target while staying together stalls the tasks.

The impostor plays differently. Sabotage creates confusion and draws crewmates away, making a kill easier to commit and explain. The real skill is the story told afterward.

Matches run online or over local WiFi, so a group in the same room can play together without going through the internet. The 4 to 15 player range gives a fair amount of flexibility: a small session with friends works, and so does a fuller lobby where more voices are competing to be believed.

The ghost role added in v19.0.0

Version 19.0.0 adds the Influencer, a ghost crewmate role. A dead player can send clues to the living, which keeps them involved in the deduction instead of just watching.

October also adds seasonal extras: decorated maps, Trick and Treat Cosmicubes, and a 2019 Halloween Bundle. That is cosmetic and event material rather than a change to how rounds work, which is a reasonable split. The core loop stays the same while the dressing changes for the season.

I would treat the Influencer as the more interesting addition of the two. A dead crewmate feeding information changes the balance of a round, because the impostor can no longer assume that removing a sharp-eyed player removes the threat. The Halloween items are there for players who like their rounds to look the part.

A group game that needs a group

Among Us is easy to recommend to people who have friends, family or a regular online crew willing to talk through a round. The rules take a minute to grasp, the rounds are short, and the deception angle gives conversation something to work with. It is the sort of game that gets better the more familiar a group becomes with each other's habits.

The caveats are worth stating plainly. It is free but ad-supported and includes in-app purchases. The 3.9 average suggests a large audience with mixed feelings, which is not surprising for a game that depends so heavily on the people in the lobby. And the experience leans on voice or text chat with others; a silent lobby is a dull one.

If you are looking for a solo game or a story to work through alone, this may not be for you. It is a multiplayer social game first and foremost, and its value comes from the arguments, the alibis and the moment the vote goes the wrong way. For groups who enjoy that, it remains an easy pick.

The short verdict

A free multiplayer deception game that rewards a talkative group and falls flat without one.

Among Us: frequently asked questions

How many players do you need for a game of Among Us?

The game is built for 4 to 15 players in a single match. That range covers a small session with a few friends as well as a fuller lobby. Everyone in the match is either a crewmate or the impostor.

Can you play Among Us with people in the same room?

Yes. Matches can be played online or over local WiFi, so a group gathered in one place can connect without using the internet. That makes it workable for a household or a group of friends meeting up.

How do crewmates win a round?

Crewmates have two ways to come out ahead. They can finish all of their assigned tasks, or they can work out who the impostor is and vote that player off the ship. The impostor, meanwhile, uses sabotage to create confusion and cover for kills.

What is the Influencer in Among Us?

The Influencer is a Ghost Crewmate role introduced in update v19.0.0. A dead player in that role can send clues to the living to help them catch the impostor. It gives eliminated crewmates a way to stay involved in the round.

Does Among Us cost anything?

The game is free to download and carries an Everyone 10+ rating. It does include ads and offers in-app purchases. Seasonal extras arrive in October too, among them map decorations, Trick and Treat Cosmicubes, and a 2019 Halloween Bundle.
