About recipe apps

They replace screenshots, bookmarks and handwritten cards, but they serve different cooks. Someone after dinner ideas will care about browsing and suggestions; a planner wants shopping lists and weekly menus; a collector wants folders, tags and notes. Apps tend to be strong in one of these areas and thinner in the others, so it helps to know which matters most to you. They also differ in how recipes are stored, how much works offline and how the screen behaves at the stove when your hands are messy.

What to look for

  • Check how recipes get into the app, since manual typing is slow and importing from a link or a photo saves real effort.
  • Look at how search and filtering work, because a large collection becomes useless if you cannot narrow it by ingredient, cuisine or time.
  • See what happens without a connection, as a kitchen with weak Wi-Fi is a common place to need the instructions.
  • Consider how the app earns its keep, since some charge once, some sell a subscription and some show advertising between steps.
  • Review how your saved recipes are exported or backed up, so a change of phone does not mean starting the collection again.
