About learning apps & games for kids

The better ones keep a clear learning goal in view while still feeling like a game, so a parent can hand over a device with some confidence. They cover preschool to school age, though the fit varies by age and subject. Some drill one skill, such as letter sounds or addition, and stay narrow; others bundle several subjects into one library. Some are made for a child to use alone, while others expect a parent nearby. How much structure they impose, and how they handle ads, purchases and offline play, vary as well.

What to look for

  • Check the age range and skill level, since an app aimed at a four-year-old will frustrate a nine-year-old and the other way around.
  • Look at how the app handles ads and in-app purchases, because a child tapping through a game can hit a paywall or an ad on their own.
  • See whether progress is saved and shown to a parent, which tells you if the app is tracking learning or just playing sounds.
  • Confirm whether the app works without a connection, since tablets often travel in cars and on flights where Wi-Fi is not available.
  • Read what data the app collects from children and how it is used, as some collect more than a parent expects from a young user.

How we rank

Apps are ranked by their Google Play rating (weighted by how many people rated them), their number of installs, how recently they were updated and how closely they fit the category. Only apps we've reviewed are included.
