Most phone editors ask you to choose between speed and control. VN's pitch is that you can have both: a multi-track timeline for frame-level work, plus automated templates that assemble a clip for you when you would rather not touch the timeline at all. That combination is the most distinctive thing about it, and it is why the app has collected more than 100 million installs and a 4.7 average across roughly 5.5 million ratings since its release in May 2018.

It is aimed at people who publish short-form video regularly: TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and similar formats. If you shoot talking-head footage, travel clips or product demos and want them cut, captioned and exported from the same app, VN is built for exactly that job. It is free to download, supported by ads, and offers in-app purchases.

A timeline editor that also does the boring parts

The core of VN is a multi-track timeline where clips, overlays, text, stickers and audio sit on separate layers. Trimming is frame-accurate down to 0.05 seconds and supports up to 30x zoom, which matters when you are matching a cut to a beat or a spoken word. Clips can be merged into a single sequence, played in reverse, frozen on a key moment, or given a speed ramp rather than a flat speed change.

What separates it from a basic cutter is the depth underneath that timeline. Keyframe animation covers 19 built-in effects with adjustable curves, masks let you isolate parts of a layer, and drafts save non-destructively with full undo and redo. For anyone who has felt boxed in by a stripped-down mobile editor, that set of controls is the reason to look at VN.

The automated side is just as prominent. AutoCut takes your footage and produces a finished edit once you pick a BeatsClips template, syncing clips to the beat of the music. You can also lay clips out along a storyline first and generate the video from that, or read from a teleprompter while recording a talking-head segment.

Captions, voiceovers and cutouts without extra tools

The part I find most useful in principle is the cleanup: it detects and removes filler words and silent stretches, which is the tedious work in any talking-head edit. Text-to-speech covers the opposite case, producing a voiceover when you would rather not record one.

Cutout removes backgrounds from both video and photos in a single tap, which is handy for placing yourself over a graphic or building a collage subject. Smooth Slow Motion uses AI frame interpolation to keep slow-motion footage fluid even when the source was shot at a standard frame rate, so you are not locked into high-speed capture to get a usable slow-mo shot.

AI Kits and the quick-create route

AI Kits bundle three generative tools. Enhance Photo improves clarity and detail in stills. Image Generation creates images from text prompts, which the developer suggests for thumbnails, covers and other creative assets. Video Generation produces clips to start an edit from rather than a blank timeline. These sit alongside the manual tools rather than replacing them, and they are the newest-looking part of the feature set.

Quick Create is the shortcut path for people who do not want to assemble anything by hand. Your own video or music can become beat-synced templates, which AutoCut then uses. Templates are also reusable: you can build your own and apply them across projects for a consistent look, or pick from a library organized around common scenarios such as talking videos, Reels, Stories, posts, YouTube videos, TikTok covers, YouTube thumbnails, festivals and business content.

Photos, collages and the asset shelf

Photo editing is not an afterthought here. Text and stickers are available, along with filters and basic adjustments such as brightness and contrast. The collage maker stitches several photos together with a range of layouts, supports cutout so subjects can be lifted from their backgrounds, and lets you add backgrounds, filters, overlays, text and stickers on top. That makes it a reasonable single stop for a photo post as well as a video.

A built-in asset library supplies stickers, fonts, filters and LUTs, and you can import your own LUTs for a particular look. Cinematic filters, transitions and visual effects round out the polish options. Importing media is flexible too: Wi-Fi transfer, WhatsApp, Telegram and Zip files are all supported routes into a project.

What it asks of you before you start

The trade-off with a tool this broad is that the timeline is not self-explanatory. Frame-accurate trimming, keyframes with adjustable curves, masks and speed ramps are the features that make VN capable, and they are also the ones that take time to learn. If your goal is to post something in two minutes, the template and AutoCut side will carry you; if you want the manual controls, expect a learning period before they feel natural.

The other considerations are the ones attached to any free app of this size. VN is free to download, shows ads, and offers in-app purchases, so the experience is not entirely without cost or interruption. It also carries a Teen content rating. None of that is unusual for the category, but it is worth factoring in if you plan to use it daily.

Export, drafts and sharing

Export tops out at 4K resolution and 60fps, which covers essentially every social platform and most screens people will watch on. Secure Mode adds passwords and expiration dates to drafts, a small feature that matters if you keep client work or unreleased material on a shared device. From there you can share directly to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and other apps.

The most recent update added a dark theme that follows your system setting, fixed a caption bug where changing one track's style altered another, and corrected text positioning when using templates made on other platforms. Those are maintenance fixes rather than headline features, but the caption fix in particular touches a tool many people rely on.

A fit for regular short-form publishers

VN suits creators who post short-form video often enough that editing speed matters, and who want the option of dropping into a real timeline when a template is not enough. The mix of AutoCut, captions, cutouts and AI generation means a lot of the routine work can be handled inside one app, while keyframes, masks and LUT imports keep the ceiling high for people who care about the details.

It is less obviously suited to someone who wants a single-button filter for a photo, or to anyone who prefers to edit on a desktop and only trim on the phone. The breadth that makes VN useful also makes it busier than a simple editor, and the ads and in-app purchases are part of that package. As a free, well-established option with a large user base behind it, it earns consideration from anyone building a regular posting habit.

The short verdict

A deep, free timeline editor for short-form video, best for creators who post often and want templates alongside manual control.

VN: Photo & Video Editor: frequently asked questions

What can VN actually edit?

VN handles both video and photos. On the video side it offers a multi-track timeline, trimming and merging, overlays, masks, keyframes, speed ramps and beat-synced templates. For photos it covers text and sticker additions, filters, brightness and contrast adjustments, and a collage maker with layouts and cutout support.

Does VN cost anything?

VN is free to download and it does show ads, and the app also offers in-app purchases. Anyone weighing it up should treat it as a free, ad-supported app rather than a one-off paid tool.

How does AutoCut work?

Pick a BeatsClips template and AutoCut assembles an edit on its own, matching the clips to the music's beat. BeatsClips templates can be generated from your own video or music, and you can also organize clips along a storyline first and then generate the video from that arrangement.

What are the AI Kits in VN?

AI Kits group three tools. Enhance Photo improves clarity and detail in still images, Image Generation creates images from text prompts for things like thumbnails and covers, and Video Generation produces clips to get an edit started. They work alongside the manual editing tools rather than replacing them.

What quality can I export at?

Exports go up to 4K resolution at 60fps, and you can share the finished file directly to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and other apps. Drafts can also be protected with passwords and expiration dates through Secure Mode if you need to keep work private.

Pros

  • Multi-track timeline with frame-accurate trimming
  • AutoCut and BeatsClips build edits from templates
  • Auto captions remove filler words and silence
  • Exports up to 4K at 60fps
  • Cutout, keyframes, masks and LUT imports
