Spirit Island screenshots
Most strategy games on Android cast you as the one expanding, conquering and settling. Spirit Island does the opposite. Designed by R. Eric Reuss and adapted by Handelabra Games, it puts you in the role of the land itself, an elemental Spirit fighting back against colonizing Invaders in an alternate-history world around A.D. 1700. That inversion is the most distinctive thing about it, and it shapes everything else.
It is a cooperative game, so the other Spirits on the island are allies rather than rivals, and the native Dahan work alongside you to build your power. If you have played the tabletop original, you already know what the digital version is reaching for. If you have not, and you like area-control games where the challenge comes from a system rather than an opponent's reflexes, this is a reasonable place to start.
An island that fights back
The premise is not just a coat of paint. You are defending a place, not claiming one, and the game's systems are built around that idea. The Invaders spread blight and destruction as they press inland, and the island responds through Fear, which you earn by terrifying them. Fear cards then feed back into the game as beneficial effects, so the act of frightening the colonizers is itself a resource you manage.
That tension between holding ground and pushing back gives the game its character. You are not simply wiping out an enemy; you are trying to survive long enough to make the island too costly to keep. The developer describes the rules as carefully adapted and thoroughly tested by expert players of the original game as well as the designer, which is the kind of claim that matters most to people who already know how the tabletop version plays.
Spirits, powers and how a turn works
Each player takes a different Spirit of the land, sky or natural world, and each one has its own elemental powers. The free portion of the game lets you create custom games with up to four available Spirits and play five full turns, which is enough to see how a Spirit's identity changes the way you approach the board. A tutorial game can be played without limit at no cost.
Powers come in two weights. There are 36 Minor Power cards that enhance what your Spirits can already do, and 22 Major Power cards with stronger effects that hit the Invaders harder. Choosing between steady improvement and a big swing is a recurring decision, and it is the sort of choice that rewards a second and third play rather than a single run.
The island itself is modular, built from four balanced boards that can be arranged into different layouts. Thematic boards are also included, reflecting the canonical island and offering a different challenge. Fifteen Invader cards drive the expansion system, two Blight cards add punishing effects as the land is corrupted, and fifteen Fear cards provide the benefits you earn along the way.
Presentation and the music underneath it
Handelabra has given the island three ways to look at it. The 3D textured maps use an isometric perspective for a more realistic feel, the 3D classic maps show the island as it looks on a tabletop, and the 2D classic maps strip things back to a top-down view for players who would rather read the board than admire it. Being able to switch between them is a small thing that says something about who the game is for.
The soundtrack is original and composed by Jean-Marc Giffin, with each Spirit carrying its own musical elements that grow and fade as the game progresses. That is a more interesting approach than a single looping track, and it gives the audio a reason to exist beyond atmosphere.
Playing with others, online
Once you unlock the full game, cross-platform online multiplayer becomes available, so you can play with friends or with other players elsewhere. Because the game is cooperative, that arrangement makes sense: everyone is working against the Invaders rather than against each other, and a group can split responsibilities across different Spirits.
I would expect the multiplayer side to appeal most to people who already have a regular group, or who are comfortable coordinating with strangers over a shared board. The free download and the tutorial give you a way to learn the basics before committing to anything further.
What you get free, and what costs money
Spirit Island is free to download, with no ads, and it offers in-app purchases. The free tier is not a demo in the usual sense: you get unlimited plays of the tutorial and custom games with up to four Spirits across five full turns, along with the Minor and Major Power cards, the modular and thematic boards, the Invader, Blight and Fear cards, and all three map styles.
Beyond that, there are three routes. Buying the Core Game permanently unlocks everything from the base game and Promo Pack 1: Flame, which adds six Spirits, four double-sided island boards, three Adversaries and four Scenarios. Horizons of Spirit Island is a one-time purchase that unlocks five newcomer-friendly Spirits, three island boards and an Adversary for good. Or you can subscribe for Unlimited Access at $2.99 USD per month, which covers all content during the subscription term, including both Promo Packs, Branch & Claw, Horizons, Jagged Earth and future content as it arrives.
The expansions are also sold individually. Branch & Claw adds two Spirits, an Adversary, 52 Power Cards, new tokens, an Event Deck, 15 Fear cards, 7 Blight cards and 4 Scenarios. Promo Pack 2: Feather adds 2 Spirits, an Adversary, 5 Scenarios, 5 Aspects and 5 Fear cards, and Nature Incarnate adds 8 Spirits, 20 Aspects, an Adversary, 12 Power Cards, 9 Fear cards, 8 Blight cards, 2 Scenarios and 9 Event cards. Nature Incarnate is being released in phases, with partial content available now and more arriving in updates at no extra cost; the most recent phase added a new Spirit and three Aspects for existing ones.
That structure rewards a moment of thought. A one-off purchase suits someone who wants a fixed set of content; the subscription suits someone who expects to want everything, including what has not been released yet. Which of the two is better value depends on how much of the catalog you expect to work through.
Who this island is built for
This is a game for people who enjoy thinking several turns ahead and who are happy to lose a few times while they learn a system. The area-control framework, the layered card play and the shifting pressure from the Invaders all point toward players who like their strategy dense rather than brisk. It is also a natural fit for players who enjoy cooperation.
Fans of the original board game are the clearest audience. The digital version preserves the components they already know, adds three viewing options and a soundtrack that responds to the state of the game, and handles the rules so nobody has to argue about them. The claim that every rule and interaction has been adapted and tested is aimed squarely at that group, and it is the sort of promise that matters when a tabletop game has as many moving parts as this one.
Newcomers are not shut out. Horizons of Spirit Island exists specifically as an introductory set with Spirits tuned for new players, and the free tutorial is available without spending anything. It is a more forgiving entry point than jumping straight into the full Core Game content.
A considered purchase for patient strategists
Spirit Island is a faithful, thoughtfully presented adaptation of a game that was never going to be simple. The free portion is generous enough to teach you the rhythms of play, the three map styles accommodate different preferences, and the music does more than fill silence. The rating sits at 3.8 from just over a thousand ratings, which suggests a game that lands well with the people it is made for rather than one that pleases everyone.
My advice is to start with the tutorial and a few custom games, then decide whether the Core Game unlock, the Horizons set or the monthly subscription matches how you actually play. If you want a cooperative strategy game with real depth and you do not mind spending time learning it, this is worth the download. If you are looking for something you can pick up and finish in a few minutes, the island will feel like a lot of work.
The short verdict
A deep, faithful cooperative strategy adaptation that rewards patient players and offers a generous free starting point.
What's new in version 3.4
If you're not careful, there are certain places on the Island you can inadvertently find your way into. In these places, the branches and leaves entangle you, strange growls and hisses encircle you, and a cold mist seeps around you, bringing a chill down your spine. When you are Smothered and Surrounded, you won't find your way out.. The 5th phase of Nature Incarnate content is now available with a new Spirit and 3 Aspects for existing Spirits.
