Most grocery apps do one job: they take an order. The Safeway app is trying to do several at once, which is the first thing that struck me about it. You can order groceries for delivery or curbside pickup, clip digital coupons, track fuel points, refill prescriptions, and log steps and sleep through a wellness hub, all under one sign-in. It is a supermarket app that behaves more like a household account.

That breadth is the pitch, and it also tells you who the app is built for. If Safeway is already where you shop, this is the version of the store that lives on your phone, with the loyalty program and pharmacy counter folded in. The app concentrates on the rewards and services tied to a Safeway account, so it suits shoppers who already treat Safeway as their main store.

The numbers behind it are unusual for a store app: more than 10 million installs and a 4.7 average from over 454,000 ratings. The app is free, carries ads, and the developer does not sell in-app purchases. It has been on Google Play since May 2012, which makes it one of the older retail apps still being updated, and the most recent release notes describe planning, shopping and saving improvements rather than a redesign.

Ordering groceries the way your week actually runs

The core of the app is the ordering flow. You can have groceries delivered to your door or choose DriveUp & Go for curbside pickup, and you pick whichever fits the day. For households that buy the same staples every week, Schedule & Save is the feature I would expect to matter most: it automates repeat essentials so the boring part of the list takes care of itself. In select markets there is also Flash, a 30-minute delivery option for when the plan falls apart at dinner time.

Building the cart is designed to be quick rather than thorough. The app surfaces frequent purchases, recommendations and past orders so you can add items without searching, and order history lets you reorder a previous basket in one go. Barcode scanning at home fills the digital cart, and you can keep lists of items you buy repeatedly. None of this is exotic, but together it shortens the distance between deciding to shop and having a cart ready.

There is a gifting side as well. You can shop, attach a personalized message and send groceries, flowers, chocolates or everyday essentials to someone else, either delivered to their door or set for store pickup. The developer says there are no extra gifting fees, and the checkout option is labeled Make this order a gift. It reads like a feature built for helping out a friend or marking an occasion without leaving the grocery app.

Coupons, fuel points and the rewards stack

Savings are handled through a stack of linked programs. You clip digital coupons, browse weekly grocery offers and exclusive sales, and watch discounts apply at checkout. Safeway for U rewards accrue and redeem automatically as you shop, and fuel points are tracked in the same place. Fuel savings run on a set rate: each 100 Points takes 10 cents off a gallon, up to $1 off per gallon, and payment and redemption happen in the app at select Safeway, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Carrs, Randalls, Acme and Vons-owned stations.

FreshPass is the subscription layer. The app itself sells no in-app purchases, which is worth knowing if you prefer to keep everything on one store account. Ads are present in the app.

Meal planning feeds the same system. Recipe content runs into the thousands, and your own recipes can be imported and turned into a shopping list. From there, a weekly menu can be pushed into the cart in a single tap. An Ask AI assistant handles the vaguer questions in everyday language, whether that is working out what to cook with chicken and rice or filtering for gluten-free snacks and comparing products.

Pharmacy, health tracking and paying with benefits

The pharmacy side is more developed than I expected from a grocery app. You can order eligible prescriptions and collect them curbside through DriveUp & Go at more than 1,700 participating pharmacy locations, transfer a prescription, refill scripts for family members or pets, book vaccine appointments and access health tests. You can bundle a prescription with a grocery pickup in one trip or keep the pharmacy visit separate.

Sincerely Health is the wellness hub attached to the same account. It tracks nutrition, steps, sleep and activity, offers custom health insights and sets goals, with rewards for eating better and moving more. The developer pitches premium rewards for positive health choices, which is the kind of promise to treat as marketing rather than a guarantee. What the app plainly does is pull these metrics into one dashboard alongside your shopping.

Where states permit, SNAP and EBT cover delivery and DriveUp & Go. WIC works only in participating stores, not through the online ordering flow. For households using either program, having the grocery order and the benefit in the same app removes a step that otherwise happens at the register.

What you need before the first order

Getting started is deliberately plain. You download the app, then sign in or create an account, and that account is the thread that holds everything together: coupons, rewards, fuel points, order history, prescriptions and the wellness dashboard. The account is the starting point rather than an optional extra.

Some features depend on where you live and which store you use. Flash delivery is available only in select markets. SNAP and EBT online payment depends on state availability, and WIC is limited to participating stores in person. Curbside prescription pickup is available at more than 1,700 pharmacy locations.

The app is free to download, and the ways to spend money inside it are the grocery orders themselves, the FreshPass subscription and whatever you choose to send as a gift. There are no in-app purchases to configure.

Who gets the most from this app

The clearest fit is a household that already shops at Safeway and wants the store's services in one place. If your weekly basket is fairly predictable, Schedule & Save, saved lists and one-tap reordering do the heavy lifting, and the coupon and fuel-point tracking gives those habits a payoff. Add a prescription or two and the curbside pickup option starts to look like the real reason to keep the app installed.

A second group is anyone managing a household budget across benefits and rewards. Clipping digital coupons, watching savings apply at checkout and paying with SNAP or EBT online on eligible items keeps several money-related tasks in one account instead of scattered across a wallet, a loyalty card and a store website. The wellness tracking and recipe imports are extras that some people will use daily and others will ignore entirely.

The app is less compelling as a general grocery tool. It is tied to Safeway's stores, rewards and pharmacy network, so its value scales with how much of your shopping already happens there. Someone who splits groceries across several chains will find the fuel points, FreshPass perks and prescription features only partly relevant.

A worthwhile install for regular Safeway shoppers

My read is that this app belongs on the phone of anyone who treats Safeway as their main store. It covers the routine well: order for delivery or curbside pickup, automate the repeat items, clip the coupons, collect fuel points and handle prescriptions without a separate trip or a separate login. The recipe and Ask AI features are a reasonable bonus on top of that, particularly for anyone who plans meals before writing a list.

The caveats are about scope rather than quality. This is a store app, and its rewards, pharmacy network and subscription perks only mean something if you shop with Safeway. Ads come with the free download, while FreshPass is a paid membership with free delivery on eligible orders and member savings.

If you are a regular Safeway customer, I would install it and set up the account properly, because the coupons, points and order history only start working once you do. If you are only an occasional visitor to the store, the app will still take an order, but most of what makes it distinctive sits behind a loyalty relationship you may not have.

The short verdict

A broad, well-established store app that rewards regular Safeway shoppers with ordering, coupons, fuel points and pharmacy in one account.

Safeway Deals & Delivery: frequently asked questions

Can I pay for a Safeway delivery order with SNAP or EBT?

Yes, on eligible items. State rules decide whether SNAP and EBT apply to delivery and pickup. WIC benefits work differently: they are accepted in store at participating Safeway locations only, so they do not carry over to the online checkout.

How does the fuel points discount work?

Every 100 Points takes 10 cents off a gallon, capped at $1 off per gallon. You can pay and redeem Points for Fuel inside the app at select Safeway, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Carrs, Randalls, Acme and Vons-owned stations.

What does the Ask AI assistant do in the Safeway app?

It takes everyday questions and turns them into shopping help. You can ask for recipe ideas, look for items that match a dietary need, or compare products, all while building a grocery list. It sits alongside the recipe library, where imported recipes can be converted into a digital list.

Do I need an account to use the app?

Yes. You sign in or create an account when you start using it, and that account is what your coupons, Safeway for U rewards, fuel points, order history, prescriptions and Sincerely Health tracking attach to.

Can I send groceries to someone else as a gift?

Yes. You shop as usual, add a personalized message and select Make this order a gift at checkout, then choose delivery to their door or store pickup. Gifting carries no extra fees, and the catalog covers groceries, flowers, chocolates and everyday essentials.
