Most people's financial lives are scattered. A mortgage statement lives in one portal, an insurance quote in an email, a savings goal in a notes app, and the yoga video you meant to do sits in a browser tab you keep forgetting to close. Rate is an attempt to pull several of those threads into a single place, and it comes from Guaranteed Rate, Inc., a mortgage lender rather than a general-purpose software company.
The app is free, carries no ads and offers no in-app purchases. That is unusual for a finance app of any size, and it shapes how the whole thing reads: this is a service app for an existing lender's customers and prospective borrowers, with lifestyle content wrapped around the financial core.
It has been installed more than 500,000 times and holds a 4.6 average from 2,128 ratings, which suggests a settled, reasonably well-liked product rather than a fresh experiment. The current version reflects a September 29, 2026 update, and the app first appeared in May 2023.
Who the Rate app makes sense for
The clearest fit is someone already in the Guaranteed Rate ecosystem, or actively shopping for a mortgage, refinance, HELOC or home equity loan. The app is built around those products: you can compare loan options, estimate payments, apply, then keep an eye on balances, interest rates and repayment schedules afterward. For that person, the app is less a novelty and more a control panel for something they already owe money on.
A second group is homeowners who want to watch their equity. The app tracks home value and equity growth over time, which is the kind of number that matters if you are weighing a renovation, a move or a HELOC. Pairing that with MLS-style listing browsing means someone thinking about their next house can look at both sides in one place.
Beyond that, the app casts a wide net. Insurance quotes, flight and hotel booking, apparel shopping, outdoor furniture, guided workouts and mental health content all live inside it. Whether that breadth appeals depends on how much you want a lender's app to also be your travel agent, your athleisure store and your meditation player. If you already use separate apps for each of those, the overlap may feel redundant rather than convenient.
Mortgage, refinance and home equity tools
The core of the app is the home loan toolkit. You can compare mortgages and refinancing options, use a mortgage calculator to estimate payments and run through different scenarios before committing to anything. Browsing MLS-style listings lets you look at homes in the same session where you check what you can afford, which saves a fair amount of tab-switching.
Once you are further along, the app supports applying for mortgages, HELOCs and home equity loans directly. After that, loan details, balances, interest rates and repayment schedules are viewable in one place, and payments go through a Loan Center. For anyone who has ever hunted for a payoff figure in a statement PDF, having that in a single screen is the kind of small thing that adds up.
I would treat the calculator and scenario tools as planning aids rather than final answers. They give you a working number to bring to a conversation with a loan officer, which is exactly what most people need before they start an application.
Insurance, travel and the shopping side
Rate Insurance covers home, auto, pet, life and renters policies, with the ability to compare quotes and look for coverage that fits your goals. Renter's insurance is the newest addition, arriving in the latest update, which rounds out the set for people who do not own yet. Quotes are quotes, though, and comparing them properly still takes the same attention it always did.
Rate Travel handles flights, hotels, car rentals and vacation packages, with price comparison built in. The app also handles orders and returns for RateFit, an athleisure and lifestyle clothing brand. Rate Outdoors goes after the home upgrade crowd with outdoor furniture, decor, saunas, cold plunges and showers.
These are separate storefronts sharing a shell. The appeal is convenience; the trade-off is that you are shopping inside a lender's app rather than a specialist retailer, and whether that feels tidy or cluttered is a matter of taste.
Wellness and performance content
The wellness layer is more substantial than I expected from a finance app. There are yoga flows, guided meditations, outdoor workouts, soundscapes and recovery routines, all framed around building daily habits for movement, sleep and stress reduction. Mental wellness content includes more than 55 videos touching on anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and relationships, and the developer points to a partnership with Project Healthy Minds for connecting with mental health professionals.
Sports performance is a separate strand, with video series covering golf, pickleball, tennis and padel, focused on technique, drills and routines. A guided workout and performance routine series called Train Like a Champion is led by athletes Tyson Bagent, Chris Chelios, Julianna Peña, Jameis Winston and Grayson Goldin.
The honest framing here is that this is content, not coaching. It gives you something structured to follow, and for someone who already trusts the brand, having it next to their loan details removes one more app from the home screen.
What it costs and what the loans cost
The app itself is free to download, shows no ads and has no in-app purchases.
The loans are a different matter, and the personal loan terms are worth reading carefully. Sign up at origination for automatic monthly payments from an eligible deposit account and the rate drops by 0.25%, to 10.74% to 21.74%. Amounts run from $4,000 to $50,000, subject to state requirements, with repayment terms between 12 and 60 months.
The developer's own example is useful: borrow $20,000 over 36 months at 10.74% APR with the autopay discount and the total cost, assuming on-time payments, comes to $23,483.32. The money cannot go toward college or university costs, cryptocurrency or securities. You must be 18 or older, or 19 in Alabama, and a US citizen, permanent resident or non-permanent resident on a valid long-term visa. Applications go through credit review and approval, plus income and employment verification, and the lowest advertised rate goes to the most creditworthy borrowers. The listed rates were last updated on June 30, 2026 and are subject to change.
How it compares with the alternatives
The obvious comparison is a bank or credit union app. Those tend to be narrower and more transactional, focused on accounts you already hold, and they rarely bundle travel booking or workout videos. What they offer instead is a tighter fit to a single institution's products, without the lifestyle layer.
A second comparison is a standalone mortgage marketplace or rate-comparison site. Those are built to shop across many lenders, which is a different job from managing a loan you already have. Rate is closer to a service app for one lender's customers and prospects than a neutral marketplace.
Then there is the wellness side, where the alternatives are dedicated meditation, fitness or mental health apps. Those go deeper on their single subject, with more content and more structure. Rate's version is a sampler that happens to sit beside your finances, and it is best judged as a bonus rather than a replacement.
A capable hub for Guaranteed Rate customers
Rate is a well-built service app with a genuinely useful financial core. The mortgage calculator, scenario comparison, application flow and loan tracking cover the full arc of a home loan, and the equity tracking adds something most lender apps skip.
The lifestyle sections are what divide opinion. Insurance quotes and travel booking feel like natural extensions of a home-and-finances app; apparel shopping and outdoor furniture less so, though the wellness and sports content is more developed than the label suggests. If you want one app that handles your loan and your morning routine, the breadth works. If you prefer focused tools, you will end up ignoring most of the tabs.
My recommendation is straightforward: install it if you have a Guaranteed Rate mortgage or are seriously shopping for one, and treat the rest as a bonus you may or may not use. Anyone outside that group can still find value in the calculator and equity tracking, but the app is at its best when the loan tools are the reason you opened it.
The short verdict
A free, ad-free hub for Guaranteed Rate borrowers, with strong loan tools and a wide lifestyle layer that will not suit everyone.
