Most diagnostic apps stop at the engine. OBD JScan is built to reach every module your Jeep, Chrysler or Dodge has, from the ABS and transmission to the radio and HVAC, and that breadth is the reason it stands out from the generic code readers. It is not a tool for every car on the road, and it never pretends to be. The developer has aimed it at one family of vehicles and gone deep rather than wide.

That focus tells you who it is for. If you own a supported Jeep, Dodge or Chrysler, do your own maintenance and want to see what the computers in your vehicle are actually reporting, this is the category of app worth considering. If you drive something outside that list, the app is not aimed at you.

The app itself is free, carries no ads, and offers in-app purchases. It has been on Google Play since May 2018, holds a 4.6 average from 3,166 ratings, and has passed 100,000 installs. The most recent update landed on September 21, 2026, so development is clearly still active.

Reading every module, not just the engine

The core of the app is diagnostic trouble code access across all modules the vehicle exposes. Standard emission-related codes are covered, but so are the modules most owners never see: ABS, steering column, automatic transmission, radio, sway bar and HVAC among them. When a warning light comes on, the useful question is usually which system raised it, and module-by-module code reading answers that directly.

Codes can be read, cleared and shared. Sharing matters more than it first appears: if you are posting a fault on a forum or sending it to a mechanic, a clean record of what the vehicle reported saves a lot of back-and-forth. The app also identifies modules, VIN and part numbers, which is the sort of detail you want before ordering a replacement component.

Live data is the other half of the picture. The app displays readings from sensors across the vehicle, not only the engine, so you can watch how a system behaves rather than guessing from a single stored code. I would treat this as the part that rewards a little patience: knowing what a sensor normally reads makes an abnormal value obvious.

Changing settings, not only reading them

Beyond diagnostics, JScan can view and change a set of vehicle settings. Tire size and axle ratio are the two that will interest anyone who has fitted larger tires or changed gearing, since both affect how the vehicle calculates speed and shifting. Daytime running light settings are also adjustable, which is the kind of small annoyance a dealer visit is hard to justify for.

This is where the app moves from a reporting tool into something closer to a configuration utility. Changing a value the vehicle's computers rely on is a different order of responsibility than reading a code, and it deserves a corresponding amount of care. The developer's own update history suggests this side of the app keeps growing: recent releases mention a PROXI procedure update, an injector kill test, EPS learn and init procedures, camera calibration, key programming for JL, JT and RU, and a ZF quick learn update.

Newer vehicles are being added as well. Ram Pro Master 2022 and later gained support in a September update, and diesel-specific work appears in the notes through DPF updates. None of that turns the app into a universal tool, but it does show the supported list is being maintained rather than left to age.

The adapter you bring decides everything

The app works together with an OBD adapter, and the developer publishes a list of supported and recommended ones. On the Bluetooth side that includes the OBD ELM327 iCar Vgate v2.0, v3.0 and v4.0, the v4.0 being Bluetooth LE and therefore also usable with iOS, plus the OBD LinkMX and OBD LinkMX+ and adapters built on the STN1170 chip.

The warning attached to that list is worth taking seriously. Cheap ELM327 clones, especially v2.1 units, often fail to connect. Saving a few dollars on an adapter that will not hold a connection is a false economy when the whole app depends on that link.

There is a second hardware requirement on newer vehicles. WK2, Durango and Journey models from 2018 onward need a security bypass cable, and so do the JL and JT. That is what the app needs to reach those vehicles. Budget for the adapter and, where it applies, the cable before you start.

Checking your model before you buy anything

The supported list is long but specific, and it is the first thing to check. It covers the Wrangler JK and JL/JT, Grand Cherokee WK and WK2 across several year ranges, Commander XK, Liberty and Cherokee KK, Compass and Patriot MK. On the Dodge side there is the Avenger, Grand Caravan RT, Journey, Caliber, Durango across three generations, Ram, Nitro, Magnum, Challenger in two ranges and Charger in two. Chrysler models include the Town & Country RT, 200, 300C, 300, Sebring and Aspen, with more listed beyond those.

Year matters as much as model. A Grand Cherokee WK2 from 2011 to 2013 sits in a different bracket from a 2014 to 2020 example, and the 2018-and-later vehicles in that group carry the bypass cable requirement. The same split appears on the Durango, the Journey and the Challenger. Read the entry for your exact model and year rather than the model name alone.

If your vehicle is on the list and you have the right adapter, the practical case is straightforward. Doing a code read in your own driveway, with the ability to clear a code after a repair and confirm it stays cleared, is the everyday value here. The settings changes and service procedures are the parts that go beyond what a basic reader offers.

Living with it as an owner

The sensible way to approach JScan is to start with reading. Pull the codes, look at live data, get a feel for what your vehicle reports in normal conditions. Only then consider changing a setting or running a service procedure, because those are the actions with consequences you will have to live with.

It also helps to keep the app updated. The release notes show a steady stream of additions and fixes, from DTC label updates to new procedures and support for additional models. An app that reaches into this many modules benefits from the corrections that come with each release.

One more habit worth forming: record what you change. If you adjust tire size or axle ratio, or run a calibration procedure, note it down. Months later, when something behaves oddly, that record is the fastest way to work out whether your own change is responsible. The discipline of tracking your own edits is what keeps that reach from becoming a problem.

A focused tool for Mopar owners

OBD JScan is a specialist app and it is good at being one. Module-by-module code access, live data, settings changes and a growing set of service procedures make it a serious proposition for anyone running a supported Jeep, Dodge or Chrysler who wants to understand their own vehicle. The free download, absence of ads and active development all work in its favor.

The conditions are just as clear. You need a compatible adapter, and on 2018-and-later WK2, Durango and Journey models, plus the JL and JT, you also need a security bypass cable. Your vehicle has to appear on the supported list, with the right year bracket. And the app offers in-app purchases.

For the owner who meets those conditions, the appeal is obvious: fault codes you can read and clear yourself, sensors you can watch, settings you can adjust without a dealership appointment. For anyone else, the supported list settles the question quickly. It is a narrow tool, deliberately so, and it is built for the people inside that narrow band.

The short verdict

A deep, focused diagnostics app for supported Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge owners with the right adapter.
