GarageBand is Apple's music creation app. It is free in the App Store on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and it turns those devices into an instrument collection and a recording studio. Apple describes the Mac version as everything you need to learn, play, record, mix and share music, even if you have never played a note.

It runs only on Apple devices. There is no Android version and no Windows version from Apple. If you are on Android and searching for it, other music apps exist, but they are different products.

What it needs

The Mac app needs macOS 15.6 or later, and it is about 732 MB. The iPhone and iPad app needs iOS or iPadOS 26.0 or later and is about 1.9 GB.

The listed versions are 10.4.14 on Mac and 2.3.19 on iPhone and iPad. Apple's notes for recent releases say only that they contain stability improvements and bug fixes.

Making music on iPhone and iPad

Apple's iPhone and iPad listing points to Live Loops, which lets you trigger loops in a grid, and Touch Instruments, which you play with Multi-Touch gestures for keyboards, guitars and beats. A Beat Sequencer builds drum-machine style grooves. You can plug in a guitar or bass and play through virtual amps and stompbox effects.

You can record up to 32 tracks, with Multi-Take Recording and 24-bit audio for recording, mixing and exporting. Multitrack recording needs a compatible third-party audio interface.

Drummer and the Sound Library

Drummer adds virtual session players that take direction and play realistic grooves. On the Mac, Apple lists 28 beat-making drummers and three percussionists across six genres. Extra instruments, loops and sound packs come from the Sound Library as free downloads.

Smart Instruments let you play a string orchestra, bass or guitar with chord strips and autoplay patterns, which helps if you do not play.

Sharing and moving projects

Songs stay in step across your devices through iCloud Drive. You can start a song on iPhone or iPad and open it on the Mac, and you can add tracks to a Logic Pro project from your phone through iCloud. You can share songs by email, and to some social sites; Apple notes that some sharing needs other apps, such as iMovie.

You can also make custom ringtones and alerts for your iPad or iPhone.

Limits

It is a beginner-friendly studio, and Apple's own Logic Pro is the step up. One App Store reviewer asks for more tracks and reports bugs in very large projects, so heavy users may reach limits.

The new system requirements also mean older Apple devices cannot get current versions. Check your macOS, iOS or iPadOS version before you try to install, so the install does not fail.

The short verdict

A free and capable starter studio for Mac, iPhone and iPad, but not available on Android or Windows.
