FOX5 Vegas - Las Vegas News

Review by eFreeware

FOX5 Vegas is the mobile app from Gray Media for the station's coverage of Las Vegas and the rest of Southern Nevada. It is a free download in the News & Magazines category, and it carries the kind of material you would otherwise catch on a newscast: breaking news, local headlines, traffic updates and the FOX5 Weather 24/7 forecast. That combination is the main reason to consider it, because it pulls the station's news, road conditions and weather into one place rather than sending you to separate sources.

The app is built for phones and tablets, so the same coverage travels with you, whether you live in the valley or are passing through. It has been on Google Play since August 2012, which makes it one of the longer-running local news apps around, and the current version was updated in September 2026 with fixes to video playback, story images and the layout of the home screen.

It is worth setting expectations early on one point. The app shows ads, and there is no in-app purchase option, so the free download is the whole proposition. The average rating sits at 2.9 from 1,797 ratings, with 619 written reviews, and the install count has passed 100,000. News apps live or die on the day-to-day experience, and this one has been updated with that in mind.

Following the day's news as it develops

The core job here is keeping up with what is happening in and around Las Vegas. Breaking news and local headlines come first, which suits anyone who wants a quick read of the area's main stories.

Because the focus is a single market, the value depends on whether that market is yours. Someone with ties to Las Vegas gets relevant stories; someone without them will find little to hold their attention.

Stories include images, and the September 2026 update corrected an issue with them. Local coverage leans on photos and video, so that matters.

Traffic and weather in one place

For anyone whose day involves a drive across the valley, having road conditions and the forecast in the same app as the headlines removes a step from the morning routine.

Weather in Southern Nevada is not a minor concern. Heat, wind and storms change how a day goes, and the developer frames the forecast as always available, which I would weigh.

The app also handles video playback. That suggests the developer treats playback as part of the core experience rather than an extra, though how smoothly it runs is something each user will judge for themselves.

What you need before you start

There is not much to prepare. The app is free on Google Play, rated for Everyone, and built for phones and tablets, so a current Android device is the only requirement.

The one thing to accept going in is advertising: the app contains ads.

The September 2026 release also reworked the layout of the home screen, which is the kind of change that affects how quickly you find what you want. Anyone who used an earlier version will notice a different arrangement on opening it.

A local news app for people with a stake in Southern Nevada

I would point this app at two groups. The first is people who live in Las Vegas or elsewhere in Southern Nevada and want the station's news, traffic and weather without hunting through several sources. The second is regular visitors and anyone with family or business in the region who likes to keep an eye on what is happening there between trips.

The rating picture is worth a moment's thought. A 2.9 average from 1,797 ratings is not a ringing endorsement, and with 619 written reviews there is plenty of feedback behind that number. At the same time, more than 100,000 installs show the app has found an audience, and the recent fixes to video, images and the home screen point to a developer still tending to the product more than a decade after its 2012 release.

My advice is straightforward. If Southern Nevada is your patch and you want breaking news, road conditions and a continuous forecast in one free app, FOX5 Vegas fits that job, provided you are comfortable with ads. If the region is not part of your daily life, its narrow focus gives you little reason to carry it.
