Age of Apes is a free strategy game from Tap4fun (Hong Kong) Limited, and it has been on Google Play since July 2020. The premise is a post-apocalyptic world where humans are gone and apes have taken over, and the goal is to launch rockets into space in search of bananas. It is a clan-based MMO, so the appeal is the mix of base building, army training and large-scale player conflict.

The main reason to consider it is scale. More than 50 million installs and a 4.6 average across more than a million ratings suggest a busy world with plenty of other players to fight alongside or against. If you like the idea of joining a clan, growing an outpost and competing in organized wars, this is built for exactly that.

A post-apocalyptic world run by apes

The setting is deliberately absurd: humans have ended, apes have inherited the earth, and their grand ambition is a space race for bananas. You pick a side among six legendary Clans, each presented as an elite pack of monkeys, and the fiction carries through the whole game. Among the characters you meet as you progress are Roger the Intendant and Junior, a powerful Clan Leader.

That tone matters because it sets expectations. This is not a grim survival game or a serious historical strategy title. The writing is playful rather than dramatic, with the joke about being monkey enough to go bananas. If a lighthearted frame around a competitive strategy game sounds appealing, the theme does a lot of work here.

Outposts, armies and the rocket race

A typical session centers on your outpost. You develop it, build an army and train monkeys to fight, and the broader objective is to push your Clan ahead of the others in the rocket race. Progress is measured both in personal strength and in how much you contribute to your group, and stealing resources from rival Clans is one of the ways you help.

Combat comes in two forms. There are PVE battles against Mutant Monkeys, which give you a way to fight and grow without depending on other players, and there are massive PVP wars against monkeys from other Clans. Ancient Ruins and huge Bosses await discovery as you travel the map. That combination of structured fights and open exploration gives the game more variety than a pure base builder.

There are many ways to contribute, from defeating Mutant Monkeys to taking resources from other Clans, and you can become the hero of all primates. What appeals to me is that the goals are layered: your outpost, your army, your Clan and the rocket race all pull in the same direction, so there is usually something useful to do whether you have a long session or a short one.

Clans, gangs and the social layer

Cooperation is the backbone. You join one of the six Clans, fight alongside your Gang and make friends with the players in it, with a social system built for planning strategies with allies. A following mechanic lets you become a famous monkey, gather followers and follow other primates in turn.

That social design is what turns a base builder into something people return to. Wars against other Clans need coordination, and the Clan is the unit that matters rather than the individual. The flip side is that the experience depends heavily on the group you land in. A Clan that communicates will make the PVP side far more interesting than one that does not, so it is worth treating your first Clan as something to choose carefully.

What the updates add

The game is still being updated, with the most recent changes dated September 22, 2026. Two additions stand out. Daily top-ups during an event unlock rewards based on which days you collect, including Pioneer outfits and Fortress decorations. There is also a new Operator Assemble 1+2 Pack, described as buy one, get two free, offering an Operator Selection Chest and growth items for Mecha power.

Both of these are purchase-driven events, which is consistent with how the game is monetized. If you prefer a strategy game with minimal spending prompts, that is worth weighing before you start, because paid events are part of the ongoing schedule.

Costs, ads and the connection requirement

Age of Apes is free to download and it contains ads. It also offers in-app purchases, with concrete examples being daily top-up gifts and Operator packs. That is the whole picture the store provides, so I would treat the game as free to start with optional spending layered on top through recurring events.

One firm requirement is stated plainly: the game needs an internet connection to play. Plan on being connected whenever you want to build, fight or coordinate with your Clan. For a clan-based MMO that is expected.

The content rating is Everyone, and the violence is stylized ape warfare rather than anything graphic. The combination of ads, in-app purchases and an always-online requirement is the practical cost of entry, and it is worth deciding up front whether that trade-off suits how you play.

A clan war game for patient builders

Age of Apes knows what it is: a free, clan-driven strategy MMO with a comic apocalypse theme and a long-term rocket race at its center. The outpost building, army training, PVE fights against Mutant Monkeys and large PVP wars give it a broad loop, and the social system around Clans and followers gives that loop a reason to keep going.

It suits players who enjoy joining a group, coordinating with allies and watching a base grow over weeks rather than sessions. It also suits anyone drawn to the silly premise of apes racing rockets for bananas, since the theme is present throughout the cast and the world. If you want a strategy game built around solo play, this is not built for that, and the ads and in-app purchases are part of the deal.

My recommendation is to go in with a clan-first mindset. The game rewards contribution and coordination, and wars, resource raids and the rocket race are group efforts. Pick a Clan you can communicate with, expect to spend time on your outpost, and the mix of building, fighting and exploring should hold up.

The short verdict

A free clan-based ape strategy MMO that rewards coordinated play, with ads, in-app purchases and an internet requirement.
