The first version of Microsoft Solitaire was released along with Windows 3.0 back in 1990. Since then, it has been a staple way to kill time and challenge problem-solving skills for Windows users. Microsoft Solitaire is still played by millions of Windows users worldwide and is now also available on Android and iOS devices via their official app marketplaces.
Since Windows 8, all Microsoft Solitaire variants were brought together in a single Microsoft Solitaire Collection app. Available on the Microsoft Store, this collection is still free to play for all Windows users. On top of all the most popular game modes, such as Klondike, Spider, and FreeCell, you can also partake in daily challenges and community events.
In this guide, we will show you how to download and install Microsoft Solitaire and how to get started playing this classic.
Since Windows 8, Microsoft Solitaire joined the official library of Microsoft Store apps, making it easier to download and install on Windows computers.

Click the blue “Get” button again when you’re on the app page for the Microsoft Solitaire Collection within the App Store. That will automatically download and install the Microsoft Solitaire app, so just give it a few moments to finish.
If you last played Microsoft Solitaire on a much older version of Windows, you will notice a lot has changed. Instead of it being different games, all Microsoft Solitaire versions are now packaged into a single app.
To launch the Microsoft Solitaire Collection, click the blue “Play” button if you’re still in the Microsoft Store app.
Otherwise, search for the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” from the Windows search bar on your Desktop and run it.
On the main screen, you’ll see all the available Solitaire game modes at the top of the screen, such as “Klondike,” “Spider,” “FreeCell,” etc. Just click any of the options to play it, and you should immediately be launched into a game.
The rules of the Classic Solitaire mode, Klondike, is as follows:
Other Solitaire modes make use of similar rules with minor variations. Whenever you play a new mode for the first time, Solitaire will provide you with a step-by-step explanation. You can also request hints from the bottom of the screen at any time if you’re stuck.
Microsoft has combined all of its Solitaire game modes over the years into a single solitaire collection. That means you can play Klondike, Spider, FreeCell, Pyramid, or even TriPeaks just by installing this one app.
Even these variants have other in-game settings, allowing you to change the difficulty, scoring method, drawing types, and more. By using these variations, you’ll be able to take on new challenges, which will keep Solitaire more entertaining for longer.
Microsoft Solitaire has plenty of other gamification mechanics built into the app. There are daily challenges that you can complete to unlock even more formidable challenges and badges and achievements. These challenges will expose you to different game modes and difficulty settings, encouraging you to explore and expand your skills.
There are also other limited-time events, some of which you will be in friendly competition with other Microsoft Solitaire players. By completing specific challenges and events, you’ll be rewarded with badges for your profile that showcase your achievements to friends and other players.
As part of the Microsoft Store, Solitaire is tied to your Microsoft account, and, by extension, to your Xbox Live account. That means that your solitaire progress, including unlocked levels and completed challenges, will sync across all devices logged into your Microsoft account. With your account, you’ll even be able to sync your progress to Android or iOS devices with the official Microsoft Solitaire app.
The Microsoft Solitaire Collection is a comprehensive source of entertainment for all Solitaire lovers. It’s available for free on Windows, iOS, and Android and has more game modes and settings than ever. The game is continually renewed thanks to daily challenges and community events, as well as cloud-synced progress across your devices.
